NOCHE DE RABANOS

Noche de Rabanos is the century old Night of the Radishes celebrated in the Oaxaca region of Mexico. Yes … Night of the Radishes. A curious festival where over-sized radishes are harvested on December 18th which are carved into Nativity or Mayan scenes to showcase artistic talent and the potential of a grand prize. Very quirky and sort of reflective of the Mexico we saw while researching for this Issue. This time I wanted to look at Indigenous culture against modern Mexico. The diaspora are the colonisers.

We had been to Mexico on honeymoon (2007), flew into Cancun, which should frankly be an American state, and then Tulum, Merida and other parts of the Yucatan - remembered it being very chilled out.

This time a slightly different vibe. It was the first long haul since the pandemic. We had sandwiched Mexico into thin slices of Miami. Partly we wanted to make sure we were somewhere easy if regulations changed, and partly because we love Miami and have been annually spending a few days on the way to somewhere else every Christmas holiday for years. But of course not the last 2. So we were ready with our tests, and ready to cancel, isolate and whatever change if needed to at the last minute so had a few back up plans. Not everything did go according to plan but we had an amazing time.

I am rolling out each section every few days.
